Dynamic Participation of EKKOMEΔ and CIFEJ in UNESCO’s Global Media and Information Literacy Week

The Hellenic Film and Audiovisual Center (EKKOMEΔ) took an active role in this year’s Global Media and Information Literacy Week Feature Conference organized by UNESCO, titled “Minds Over AI – MIL in Digital Spaces,” which took place in Cartagena, Colombia. Representatives of EKKOMEΔ and CIFEJ delivered two significant presentations that showcased Greece’s contribution to the international dialogue on audiovisual literacy and its connection to contemporary technological developments.

The first presentation, titled “CIFEJ Reimagined: A Global Vision for Children’s Cinema and Screen Literacy,” was co-organized by EKKOMEΔ and CIFEJ (the International Centre of Films for Children and Young People) hosting speakers from Greece, the United States, and Latin America. The discussion focused on the role of children’s and youth cinema as a means of education, a catalyst for critical thinking, and a vehicle for cultural identity. It underscored the importance of integrating film education into school curricula and ensuring that all children have equitable access to high-quality audiovisual content.

The second presentation by EKKOMEΔ, titled “Cultivating Critical Minds in a World Influenced by AI”, explored the challenges and opportunities emerging from the rapid evolution of Artificial Intelligence. Through a constructive dialogue with academics and industry professionals, the discussion emphasized the need to foster skills of critical understanding and responsible use of audiovisual media—so that citizens, and especially young people, can navigate the digital world with awareness, discernment, and creativity.

EKKOMEΔ’s participation in UNESCO global feature conference represents a strategic step in strengthening Greece’s international presence in the field of Media and Information Literacy. It also signals the country’s commitment to engaging with key global issues such as accessibility, content quality in the age of AI, and the use of audiovisual media as a tool for intercultural education and inclusion. Through this initiative, EKKOMEΔ reaffirms its role as a vital link between the Greek audiovisual sector and global trends and initiatives, remaining dedicated to advancing Greece’s voice in the global dialogue on Media and Information Literacy, while promoting policies that connect audiovisual creativity with education, critical thinking, and democratic participation in the digital era.
